The 2012 “Hong Kong-Guangdong Cleaner Production Partners” Label Award Presentation Ceremony was held at Zhujiang Hotel in Guangzhou on 20 November 2012. A total of 136 enterprises, including 109 manufacturing enterprises, 3 sourcing enterprises and 24 environmental technology service providers received commendation this year.
Officiating the ceremony were Ms Christine Loh, Under Secretary for the Environment, Mr. Andrew Lai, Deputy Director of Environmental Protection, Mr. Liu Zhigeng, the Deputy Secretary General for Guangdong Province, Mr. Bi Junsheng, Division Chief of the Department of Energy Efficiency of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Ms. Bi Zhijian, Counsel Director of the Economic & Information Commission of Guangdong Province, Mr. Zhong Xiaoping, Deputy Director General of Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology, etc.
Christine Loh, Under Secretary for the Environment said the Cleaner Production Partnership Programme has been well received by the industries. So far, more than 2,000 funding applications have been approved and about 27,000 people from enterprises in Guangdong and Hong Kong have participated in various awareness promotion activities, surpassing the initial targets set for the Programme.
She also said that it has been a priority area for Hong Kong-Guangdong regional environmental collaboration to encourage and facilitate enterprises in the Pearl River Delta region to adopt cleaner production.
The Government plans to extend the programme for another two years. This will tie in with the work of promoting energy efficiency and reducing emissions as stated in the National 12th Five-Year Plan, and further reduce the emission of air pollutants in the PRD region," she said.
Ms Loh and officials from Hong Kong and Guangdong Governments visited a Hong Kong-Guangdong Cleaner Production Partner Enterprise. This HK-owned enterprise has been actively adopting cleaner production measures since their participation to the Cleaner Production Partnership Programme. A reduction of 180 tons VOC emission per year is achieved. And this is only one of the many enterprises benefited from the Programme. The Programme approved a total of 151 demonstration projects. It is estimated that these projects contributed to the reduction of 480 tonnes VOC emission, 520 tonnes SO2emission, 370 tonnes NOx emission, 110,000 tonnes CO2 emission and 2,100,000 effluent discharges.
